The Service demonstration will be the application of the software toolbox to produce and validate new satellite derived maps and indicators. Two major approaches will be applied:

  • produce maps and indicators for 4 points in time (defined through user consultation, e.g. 1975, 1990, 2005, 2015/16 ) to get an overview of the long-term developments in 20-25 wetlands and respective catchment areas
  • produce monthly updates of maps and indicators for 2 years (e.g. 2010 and 2016), to capture seasonal and short term changes and dynamics for 5-10 (some products 20) wetlands and respective catchment areas

The service will be developed and demonstrated on a selection of wetlands meeting criteria that will be further refined during the user consultation process. The demonstration sites will aim to cover an array of existing protected areas, such as wetlands nominated as Ramsar and/or Natura 2000 sites, as well as future protected areas in Europe, but also in Africa and Asia to highlight the transferability of the service. The contribution of the service will also be tested for the definition or revision of river basin management plans and associated programme of measures under the Water Framework Directive, in particular for natural water retention measures. Envisioned criteria for the selection of test sites will include:

  • Capacity to deliver specific ecosystem services (regulating services, provisioning services, supporting services)
  • Capacity to test specific targets of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 (Actions 6 a. of Target 2 calling for identifying areas for restoration and prioritisation)
  • Capacity to test specific targets of the CBD Strategic Plan 2011-2020 (Aichi Targets) for countries outside the EU
  • Biogeographical distribution
  • Governance setting, i.e. different scales of conservation governance and management
  • Particular interest in cross-border wetlands
  • Availability of local knowledge and data for the validation and assessment of the service
